Sunday Series Round 4 Orchard 26/04

Here we are at the fourth round of the Sunday series at Orchard, over 30 turned up today for this round and it was going to be on the match lake and main lake, with me today fishing was my wife and son,the draw was made and i pulled peg 19 out of the bag on the match lake, my wife pulled peg 7 on main with Mac on peg 1 on main, peg 1 being in the corner and home to many lumps, fishing close to the reeds would normally result in a few of the better carp that resided there,Min's peg was half way down the main bank with open water and an island that was out of reach with the pole,i got to my peg and had Nigel Groom to my right and a young lad i think his name is Toby to my left, pegged next to Nigel on the end peg was Paul Dibbden (niblet) to those that know him as he normally fishes corn for everything.

I don't normally go into the super pools on the club match, as those of you that have followed my blog will know it was to my detriment on one of the matches where i was second overall and missed out on the super pool as i didn't enter, this time Mrs wife treated me. I was set up in plenty of time and my three lines today were six sections on the slope, 8 sections for up in the water and one margin rig to fish paste, on the off and i fed the margins ad went out and potted in a good dose of 4mm pellet at six sections then went over the top with corn on the hook, three put ins and three carp for about 7lb in the net in the first 10 minutes, couldn't see what the lad next door was doing but i could see Nigel was catching right across and down the middle,i was keeping up with him swapping between soft pellet and corn, but i could see Paul catching some nice fish, every time i looked round he was landing fish, all the time i was pinging across and before long the mouths were coming up,so it was a quick ten minutes across to see if they were having it,they were there and they were having a go, i caught across steadily for the last two hours and thought it would be tight between me and Nigel and i thought Paul had done us both.

I was packed up and walked around to follow the weigh in,there were a few 50s and 60s coming out and i thought i might have about 70lb, the scales came to me and i weighed just over 86lb with Nigel weighing about 75lb and Paul weighing about 77lb (god i must write these weights down on the day )so i had won our lake but more important i had got good points for my league.

Back at the hut i saw the best weight was high 50s on the main lake so i knew i had won overall, my first victory at Orchard. i had been knocking on the door for a while now and thanks to Barry, Shane and Phil with some pointers i was now putting some good nets together,so i picked up for winning my league for winning my lake and the superpool, happy days,Min's day was not so fruitful, the last couple of weeks she has only been able to fish on the main lake due to the other lakes having matches on and the main lake can be a bit fickle sometimes and a bit peggy so she was a little down after the match and i didn't help by not asking her how she got on i was more interested in seeing what the top weight was on the main lake(sorry darling )anyway i think she wants to put the main lake behind her for now and have some sessions on the match lake, as for Mac he done OK on peg 1 and had nearly 18lb and he reckons he lost as much as he caught as he couldn't get them out of the reeds, but Barry pegged next to him said that he done OK and is improving all the time, so all in all a good weekend for me and some good results as well, be nice to keep consistent and if i can be there or there abouts i will be happy, I'm sure Min will get going again soon when she starts kicking ass on the match lake, and she has some nice new floats to rig up ready for the coming sessions.

Tight Lines

Supercup 25/4 Orchard

I had an email from Barry rose at the beginning of the week asking if i might be available to fish this Saturday if his back was still playing him up, this i agreed to but was hesitant as i didn't want to let the side or Barry down. On Thursday i spoke with Barry and he said that i would have to stand in for him as his back was not a lot better, we were fishing against a team from the isle of white, and we knew what pegs were being used as we had home advantage, we also knew what pegs we would be on, for me it was either peg 2 or peg 3, the previous Wednesday they had come over to practice and when the weighed in they had averaged 60lb a man, i felt that 80lb would be a good weight off either 2 or 3 and that was the target i set myself, draw time came and i was allotted peg 3 with my foe on peg 2, the way it works is you are only worried about beating the guy you are drawn next to, if you weigh more than him then you get 1 point if you lose you get 2 points, if you fail to weigh in you get three points(but i could never see anyone tipping back, could you Barry )

I had in my mind a plan of attack, keeping things simple and getting my head down and just fish, the wind was sending waves down the arm we were fishing on so 1 of my plans was out the window, fishing over with long pole shallow and pinging pellet, but there was no way you could hold the pole out against the wind like it was.

At the all in the guy next to me went straight out on the long pole and he struggled for the twenty odd minutes he was out there,i in turn went out at 4 sections feeding 4mm pellet with soft pellet on the hook fishing down the slope, i also fed both margins,i started catching from the off with the normal Tench and carp, but even though i was using a heavy float for the shallow depth it was still moving about a lot in the waves, striking off the soft pellet with missed bites,a change was needed and a tin of corn was opened and i carried on fishing the same way feeding pellet but this time with corn on the hook,i wasn't paying to much attention to the next peg but i could see he was catching regular fish, i had a few decent fish and lost a few as well with foul hookers where they were coming up in the water, i tried a shallower rig over the top but didn't get a bite, so i went straight back in with my deep rig and started catching again, with the odd one hooked up the rear, luckily enough i managed to get a few of them in.

Where i had been feeding my inside margins i thought i would dip in for 5 Min's on each, i could see on my left margin that the silt was getting churned up and i could see tails where the fish were getting their heads down rummaging for food,i dropped in on top of them but all i got was liners and 1 foul hooked carp that i lost at the net,i think this was my own fault as i had overfed it and they were to busy digging around for the pellet i put in instead of being interested in my hook bait, i couldn't put up with it any longer and went back out on the four section line and carried on catching pretty regular until the end of the match, when the all out was called it was a relief it was over, the guy next door came over and i asked him how he thought he had done and he told me he thought he had just done me, i thought i would say nothing and await the scales.

Scales arrived and my opponent weighed his fish for a weight of 68lb odd i knew it would be tight but my fish went just over 82lb, woo hoo 1 point in the bag, the scales continued down the first arm and we ended up winning all four sections that gave us 4 points with Shane on 12 being top weight of our 8 man section, another set of scales was weighing the middle arm and we were waiting for news we just needed one point to ensure victory,John pole got beat even though he weighed over 90lb,Barry James got done by the guy next to him, so things were looking tight, and it might have to go to count back on the weight if it was a tie, we needed one more point now from either Colin or Nathan, Nathan said it was tight between him and the guy next to him, but Colin saved the day and came good by winning his section and poor old Nathan lost out by 4oz,so we ended up with 5 section wins out of 8,well done Orchard, and i was proud to stand in for Barry and not let him down or the team.
The top three overall fro the day were Mark from the IOW first, John Pole second and Shane third with me taking our section of 8 by default. Well done to all that fished in difficult conditions, on to Gold Valley for the semis next, and I'm sure the guys will get a good result and get themselves into the final, i was happy to just be a part of the team for the day.

Wednesday open at Orchard 22/4

Another day to Orchard and on arrival it was the usual Wednesday suspects, i think there were 13 fishing today, i drew peg 21 on the far side and set my stall out from the start fishing shallow at 11 mt and margins both sides and one straight out at 4 sections, fishing shallow is ok if you can get the fish up in the water and keep them coming, i fed the margins and started at 4 sections on the corn which would allow me time to ping across and try to get them up in the water, suffice to say it didnt take too long and soon i swapped over and started stringing a few together, just to heap the pressure on i had Barry park behind me and watching me, then that doubled when Wacky strolled round and sat in the car with him, im self critical enough about fishing without having two better anglers than me sat behind me, i managed to keep them coming most of the day and i knew i had beat the guy next to me but was not sure what i had, with ten minutes to go i had the rig wrapped round the tip of the pole and broke on a fish, instaed of changing the rig and getting back out there i swapped to the inside rig for the remainder, bad move.

I was first to weigh and brought 98/12 to the scales (bugger) one fish away from my first ton at orchard and winning my ice cream bet with Barry on the first one of us to hit the ton. I should have changed the rig with 10 mins to go and snagged another fish,i stayed the top weight until we got round to Shane who said that he didnt have as much as me and we had a pound on the outcome, little bugger weighed 106 odd and he duly handed over his pound, so not a bad day and another consistant result, well done Shane. I just need to win one of these to get into the final that they have for all the wednesday winners, oddly enough i think the Wednesday final is held on a Saturday.

Till next time

Saturday final Orchard 18/04

Today was the final at Orhard, to get to the final you had to finish in the top two over a series of qualifyers, i snuck in with two to go, and now we were all here to do battle, one missing todday was Barry Rose who had done his back in and could not fish, shame really as he is a great angler and the final would not be the same without him fishing, but he was there to watch over proceedings,,44 pegs on the lake split betwen 15 anglers so there would be plenty of room for everyone. Draw time comes and i pull peg 44 (end peg) up the middle arm but somewhere i have never fished before, for company today i had for a change Blakey so i knew it wouldnt be a quiet days fishing, the other side of Blakey was Wacky mad as a hatter but good angler, down on peg 33 in the corner was John Pole, very laid back guy and another great angler, as for some of the others Shane was on peg 12 and Phil was on peg 18.

Peg 44 is the end peg up the middle arm with some lillys on the right of the peg right on the bend, these were going to be my main line today with another line to 6mt main attack today was going to be paste and corn, with 6 hours fishing there was room to change if i had stuffed up,i went out on the pads line at the start and managed to get a few going on the corn over pellet, while feeding the 6 mt line, swapping between corn and paste, Barry had parked his car up on the other side of the lake and he was keeping an eye on me, Shane and Phil his team mates for the upcoming teams of four.

Bakey was getting snagged up fishing over and giving his usual running commentary, losing rig after rig and swapping and changing, to be fair im normally quite a vocal person but when im fishing i like to just get on with the job in hand and try and zone everything else out,i could see Phil over on the far bank through the trees catching some lumps so i knew he was doing good, and Shane behind me was doing his normal baggin on the method,i swapped over to the 6 mt line ans started catching straight away, this went on one a chuck for about an hour mainly carp an tench, then for some strange reason i swapped back to the pads, why i dont know but i thought i would get better fish there, but i was doing ok on the 6 mt line i had no reason to change, i went in with the paste and was getting fish both sides of the pads, there were a lot of fish down there but i was getting a few foul hooked fish, i couldnt really shallow up as there was not a lot of depth there, i continued swapping between the two line for the duration and i thought it was tight between me and Blakey but i was sure that Shane and Phil had done better than me.

Come tthe weigh in there were a few 60s and 70s until the scales got to Shane on peg 12 he weighed 114lb odd and i knew i never had that, other weight coming out were Phil with 99-14 and then Colin on peg 30 had 97 odd, moving up the middle arm the banker here i thought would be John Pole on 33 but he only weighed 60lb odd moving down the middle arm there were no more weights anywhere near the top three, Blakey weighed 80lb odd and i weighed 86lb and that was that match over. Top three on the day were Shane, Phil and Colin Mapstone, i won my section and collected some coin so all in all a good day.

Well done to all those that Qualified and extra well done to the top three.

Monday Knockup Match lake Orchard

Shane and Barry Rose asked us on Friday when we were out at Orchard if we fancied fishing a bit of a knock up on Easter Monday, didn't take long to think about that then, wife was in the kitchen the night before and made some of her concoctions, i settled for pellet, corn and Paste, yes i know i said i wouldn't try it until i had had some play sessions with it but i put it in the carryall for a backup.

At the draw there were 11 fishing today with Nathan (some say he is the love child of Blakey) surprise surprise Blakey was there as well,Phil from the fishery, Shakey Pete,Barry James, a guy called Brett whom i don't know and a few others. Wife drew before me and peg 30 came out stuck to her hand (nice corner peg)i pulled peg 27, one of the pegs of death (fishing across here you tend to pick up the really small carp about 6oz)Nathan was on 33 opposite the wife with Blakey on peg 21 and Barry James on 18, conditions were flat calm at the start and with 6 hours today there was plenty of time, the last few days there have been a few nets over the 100lb mark coming out so the water is really starting to come alive now.

I set up three rigs today one right across, one for the margin and one for bottom of far shelf, at the all in i started across fishing 6 inches deep and spraying a few pellet over. yep and you guessed it pestered by small carp, bugger ,i persevered for 45 Min's hoping i would get some better fish but to no avail so i came into the inside margin for 10 Min's to see if the feed i put down had brought in the better fish, 20 Min's later and 1 carp of about a pound and a half and a skimmer of about a pound that was it, by now it was nearly 90 Min's in to the match and i was getting battered by my wife on peg 30 she was the next one along from me, with two empty pegs between us.

Out comes the paste, i know what i said but needs must,i started feeding loose 4mm pellet at 4 sections out while getting the paste rig ready, i then fished at four sections with the paste dictating the float setting using the slope to get it right, well the next four and a half hours was a true eye opener, i had constant fish for the remainder, biggest no more than three pound with a few tench and a couple of crucians in there as well but as soon as that paste landed the fish were on it, and i feel that if i had more practice on it then i would have had more in the net, i modified things as i went and it was a joy to be learning and catching all in one go,i learnt a lot from fishing with the paste and now have a better idea about the whole paste thing.

Anyway on with the weigh in Barry James had just over 67lb, blakey was next to weigh with 101lb dead, Brett had 44 odd and then it was me, i admited to 60lb but wasnt sure what i had but i thought i would be happy with 60lb today, scales told me i was past the 60lb mark and weighed 85-13, to i say i was pleased was an understatement, as i had a really good days sport and learnt a lot today about the paste, next to weigh was the wife and she was well chuffed with her 47-12,beating her previous best weight at Orchard by 20lb, well done her,she came 7th out of the 11 fishing, she has amazed me at the way she has immersed herslf into fishing and her hard work that she has put in, in the dozen times she has fished is paying off, proud as punch of her.

Scales moved round to Blakeys love child(Nathan) who was on peg 33 and had been bagging all day, he weighed 120-13, so was a good practice for the Saturday Final this coming weekend (oops i forgot he didnt qualify ha ha)moving up the middle arm there were a few 60s an 80 and a couple of 40s. so third for me and the wife beat a few as well, might venture out for the Wednesday open this week then we have the final on Saturday.

Top Three

Nathan 120-13
Blakey 101-00
Terry 85-13

tight lines

Wednesday open at Orchard 8/4/09

Not really alot to say about this one, i couldn't get into it, had wife and son fishing as well today, Mark Harper from Preston's won it with 95lb odd, from peg 33,Shaun won the silvers with over 40lb i had 39.8 from peg 9 and didn't really enjoy the day, until Shaun broke his 7 section off his new ONE Pole from Preston Innovations, costly day for him but a chuckle for me, bad Terry.

Wife drew peg 27 for her second match and fished a tidy five hours for 27-12 and son was on peg 37 for 18-14,it was a good day but i didn't have my head in match mode today, so must try harder, i spent to long playing with paste when i should have stuck with what i know and play with the paste on a play session not in a match.

Till next time

Wednesday Open Orchard April fools day

Well well this is a turn up for the books, guess who i have for company on my way to the match today, Mrs Wife, she has plucked up the courage to try her hand on her first match, a brave decsion seeing she has only fished about six times and only three of those totally on her own without me butting in and trying to help her.

She was ready on time and we arrived about thirty minutes before the draw, i paid our money and sat around chatting with the other Wednesday work skivers, a good turn out today with 23 fishing, the draw was called and Min put her hand in and came out with peg 12 i pulled peg 8, so we were close enough so i could keep an eye on her, this was the first time she had fished using a keep net, not a biggy but here you have to use three so she was worried about setting them up and not hooking the nets when she was shipping in and out, but she was fine, i gave her a few pointers on where to fish and left her to it and got on with worrying about what i was going to do, i had Blakey next to me on peg 9 so i was going to get my assed kicked today, i set up to fish one line straight down the middle and one margin line i didnt even bother setting up a far line rig as the wind was a pain in the ass and i knew i could not stick fishing that for 5 hours.

At the all in i fed the inside line and went straight out to the middle, within ten minutes i was catching and a constant strem of small carp and tench were coming regulary, Blakey on the next peg was fishing fast but not connecting right across with moans about the wind coming from him, i just carried on with what i was doing and stuck at it for an hour, feeding pellet and catching on corn,i could see further down on peg 12 that Min was netting a few fish(she set herself a target of ten fish, she said she would be chuffed if she caught ten)after an hour i dropped in the margin for a five minute look and straight away the float buried and i caught a lump of 6/7 pound fed and back in again and i caught his brother of the same stamp, one more quick look and nothing so back out to the middle, Blakey was catching now though he was trashing a few rigs and struggling with the cross wind, for me the match carried on with much of a muchness and Blakey had overtaken me by now but boy was he working hard for his fish chopping and changing and trying different things right across, i was first to weigh and i weighed 44lb dead,Blakey kicked my ass good and proper with 72lb odd with the guy on the next peg to him weighing just over 19lb, then it was Min's turn i helped her with her nets and she weighed in 23-12 well done Mrs,she beat the guy next to her so i was chuffed for her, and she beat her target of 10 fish by catching 26 so well done her,i carried on packing up then had a walk round with the wife to follow the scales, a guy on peg 14 weighed 50lb and a few bits,20lb of that was silvers so he had beat my 12lb on the silvers and beat me overall, so i was pushed down to third place,we followed the scales and along the way there were a few that had not weighed as much as Min,her smile was getting bigger.

We got right round to peg 33 before someone else weighed more than me with Shane beeting me by a pound for third spot,we watched the last people weigh and some of the weights were a bit poor, back to the shack and looking through the weigh list i came 4th overall with Blakey winning it and Sean second and Shane third, Sean also won the silvers with his 20lb net, looking through the list Min came 11th out of 23 so i think she done really well and i think she surprised herself, Phil the scalesman took great pleasure in telling people as he was weighing them if they caught less than Min that they had been Minned today, nice one.

So thats her first match out the way and i think she has got the fishing bug now, with 4 of us in the house fishing now, and three of us fishing matches i might have to get a paper round on top of my normal job so we can finance it lol

right fully up to date now and im off to open my parcel from Dave the Loon and plunder the goodies.
